High Performance Athlete Innovation Lab (HAIL)
High Performance Athlete Innovation Lab—a laboratory integrated within the U-M Athletic Department as part of a strategic framework to elevate the sport science experiences at U-M to a level that will position the institution as an international leader in educational and research opportunities in this rapidly advancing field.
The High Performance Athlete Innovation Lab (HAIL) is located in the UM Athletics South Performance Center
2530 S. State Street, SPC B050
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1048
About HAIL
In partnership with Michigan Athletics, the High Performance Athlete Innovation Lab (HAIL) will provide core research capabilities and educational laboratory opportunities to support a component of the multidisciplinary mission of the University of Michigan Human Performance and Sport Science Center, Athlete Innovation Initiative. HAIL exists within a dedicated 800 square foot laboratory space inside the SPC.
Under the oversight of Dr. Kozloff and Ivan Palomares-Gonzalez, lab manager, this space will establish an academic and research hub located within U-M Athletics that is co-localized with student athletes, coaches, and athletic medicine staff. Importantly, it leverages the existing equipment within the SPC (e.g., treadmills, exercise bikes, DEXA, integrated force plates in track, and field-turf rooms) for use in combination with research-grade equipment.
In addition to an educational program supporting an applied lab-based assessment program, this space will also be leveraged to advance ongoing research collaborations with Michigan Athletics, with the possibility for expansion into new research and educational collaborations built around this framework.
The Mission of HAIL
The mission of HAIL is to support U-M Student Athletes through assessments of biomechanics of human movement and physiologic conditions to optimize performance, enhance injury resiliency, facilitate recovery from injury, and ensure health & wellbeing in partnership with their team professional staff.
HPSSC’s Athlete Innovation Initiative student and professional staff and faculty operating in HAIL are:
- Student-Athlete centric/focused
- Maintain student-athlete privacy
- Focused on maintaining and preserving student-athlete and team competitive advantage
- Collaborating with the Athletic Department based on relevance and need.
CONNECTION TO U-M STRATEGIC PLAN
The High Performance Athlete Innovation Lab
- Creates a unique nexus for collaborative research and education that links U-M Athletics and the HPSSC Athlete Innovation Initiative in a collaborative and inclusive effort.
- Establishes the foundation for ongoing commitment and dedication to providing diverse and impactful research and education experiences for students and faculty in the unique environment of Michigan Athletics.
HAIL Athlete Assessments
3-D motion capture, IMU and other wearable sensors to evaluate bio-mechanical human motion and physiological responses during any type of exercise.
Cosmed metabolic carts, wireless EKG, and instrumented treadmills allow for in-depth evaluation of running biomechanics and physiology.
Additional capabilities include an in lab DEXA scanner, urine and blood biomarker assessments, isokinetic dynamometer, and field equipment to measure on-field performance.
