Data Analytics

This program opportunity expands on the current efforts offered to undergraduate students enrolled in UM School of Information (UMSI)courses, i.e., SI 311 and SI 491.

This program component selection is managed through the UM SI.  Students need to meet prerequisites and qualifications as established by UM SI to be considered for this opportunity and/or participation in the course.

In fall terms, UMSI offers Sports Analytics. SI 311, a seminar-style course introduces students to the use of data analytic techniques in the context of understanding sports outcomes, and specifically the use of analytics in the NCAA and pro leagues.

In SI 311, once students meet UM SI requisite criteria and selection process, students will be assigned to U-M teams in order to help coaches, trainers and student-athletes gain insights to provide competitive advantage against Michigan’s opponents, to improve student-athlete well-being, and to reduce student-athlete injuries.

UM SI 491 is an independent study course option at the undergraduate level and involves writing a substantial research paper or research.  Students need to meet UM SI requisite criteria and selection process to enroll.

These UM SI students will be paired with a new experiential offering for qualified students interested in applied sport science technology through the HPSSC Applied Sport Science Technology Assistant position.

Educational focus is on best practices for data collection (i.e., privacy and storage), data analysis, and interpretation, with particular emphasis on cross-disciplinary communication among student teams, coaching and training staff communication, and other related members of the HPSSC faculty and the University of Michigan Performance support teams. Based on current structures, we anticipate initial placement of approximately 13 students in this role, with the capacity to rapidly expand depending on growing athletic team opportunities.
