HPSSC Experiential Learning Initiative

Launching this Fall 2024 is the HPSSC and U-M Athletics Student Experiential Learning Initiative whose goal is to elevate the student educational experience based in:

  • Hands-on training and application of the use of sport technologies, wearables and sensors, and data analytics within U-M Athletics
  • Interdisciplinary instructions surrounding performance optimization in exercise and sport for student-athletes and teams within U-M Athletics.

The Human Performance and Sport Science Center at the University of Michigan, with U-M Athletics, Orthopedic Surgery, and the School of Information as partners, have designed and received funding for this multi-year partnership that extends through 2029.

Leadership Message

“The Human Performance & Sport Science Center (HPSSC) is excited to launch a new initiative with support from the University of Michigan’s (U-M) Office of the Provost, the School of Kinesiology and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and in acknowledgement of the HPSSC investigators strong history of collaborative partnerships with the Michigan Athletic Department to better promote student-athlete health and wellness, injury risk, and ultimately to achieve optimal athletic performance.  The HPSSC Student Experiential Learning Initiative, will foster ongoing data analytics collaborations with the School of Information and will create unique student placements and learning opportunities through a new Applied Sport Technology Assistant Program.  In parallel, HPSSC will will inaugurate the HPSSC Athlete Innovation Laboratory (HAIL)—a unique sport science facility integrated directly within the South Performance Center of Michigan Athletics.  As a centralized hub for nearly two-thirds of all student athletes at U-M, the HAIL lab will serve as a training and in-depth learning environment for students to apply advanced performance measures across sports within Michigan Athletics to assess and optimize student-athlete performance.

This initiative as designed was in response to the rapid growth of the field of sport science and the increasing interest in students at U-M in pursuing sport science career opportunities across all ability levels as HPSSC has seen in both their core research lab, MiPR Lab, and in the enrolled students in the HPSSC general education courses with sport science topics.   Building on the dynamic and active partnership with Michigan Athletics is excited for the HPSSC Student Experiential Learning Initiative which will elevate sport science educational and research experiences at U-M to a level that will position the institution as an international leader in educational and experiential learning in the rapidly advancing field of sport science.

HPSSC and its partners are excited to see this initiative unfold by welcoming student applicants to our first cohort of Applied Sport Science Technology Assistants.”
