About HAIL

In partnership with Michigan Athletics, the Athlete Innovation Lab (HAIL) will provide core research capabilities and educational laboratory opportunities in support of the multidisciplinary mission of the University of Michigan Human Performance and Sport Science Center, Student Experiential Learning Initiative. HAIL will exist within a newly dedicated 800 ft2 laboratory space inside the SPC.

Under the oversight of Dr. Kozloff, this space will establish an academic and research hub located within U-M Athletics, creating new laboratory space that is co-localized with student athletes, coaches, and athletic medicine staff. Importantly, it leverages the existing equipment within the SPC (e.g., treadmills, exercise bikes, DEXA, integrated force plates in track, and field-turf rooms) for use in combination with research-grade equipment.

In addition to an educational program supporting an applied lab-based assessment program, this space will also be leveraged to advance ongoing research collaborations between HPSSC and Michigan Athletics, with the possibility for expansion into new research and educational collaborations built around this framework.

The Mission of HAIL

The mission of HAIL is to support U-M Student Athletes through assessments of biomechanics of human movement and physiologic conditions to optimize performance, enhance injury resiliency, facilitate recovery from injury, and ensure health & wellbeing in partnership with their team professional staff.

HPSSC’s initiative is:

  • Student-Athlete centric/focused
  • Maintains student-athlete privacy
  • Developed to maintain and preserve student-athlete and team competitive advantage
  • Developed in collaboration with the Athletic Department based on relevance and need.
