John Chase, PhD is the Athlete Innovation Program Coordinator for the University of Michigan Human Performance & Sport Science Center. In this role his primary responsibilities include management and guidance of the student technology assistants, delivery of educational material surrounding student technology and assessment roles, and oversight of performance assessments for our student-athletes in the new HAIL space (lower level of the U-M South Performance Center (SPC).  John will also be responsible for the integration of ongoing student collaborations with Athletics and the newly developed Athlete Innovation Initiative.  In his new role, John looks to aid in performance improvement, injury mitigation and recovery optimization for our student-athletes through science-backed assessments and evidence-informed practices.

John earned his bachelor’s (Michigan State University), master’s (James Madison University), and doctorate (University of Massachusetts Amherst) degrees in Kinesiology, followed by completion of a postdoctoral fellowship in the Somneuro Lab (Department Psychological & Brain Sciences, University of Massachusetts Amherst).

Dr. Chase’s primary research interests involved understanding the reciprocal relationships between 24-hour physical behaviors (sleep, physical activity, and sedentary behavior) and their impact on cognitive health outcomes. He has additional expertise in real-world application of wearable sensor technology to assess and optimize human health and performance metrics. Prior to joining the HPSSC team, he received scholarships and awards from the New England American College of Sports Medicine as well as the School of Public Health & Health Sciences and Graduate School at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

John will be based out of the HAIL space on the lower floor of the U-M Athletics South Performance Center (SPC) and in 1235 SKB.
