Athlete Innovation Lab (HAIL) Assessment Role
HPSSC is developing this component of the Athlete Innovation Initiative to place students within the Athlete Innovation Lab (HAIL) to learn and execute best practices for the following:
- data collection,
- data analysis,
- data interpretation, and
- assessment results dissemination
The role provides students opportunity to develop and directly administer applied physiologic and/or biomechanical assessment skills in the context of high performance sport as deemed appropriate by HPSSC and Athletic Department staff, while learning about and staying compliant with all NCAA and Big 10 rules and regulations.
Educational focus will be on developing rigorous applied skill development and application along with data collection through physiologic (e.g. VO2 max, lactate threshold, running economy, and resting metabolic rate) and biomechanical (e.g. gait testing, countermovement jump, and strength assessments) testing.

U-M HPSSC HAIL ASSISTANT ROLE
HPSSC is recruiting for an inaugural advanced undergraduate or master’s level student role overseen by HPSSC faculty and staff and U-M Athletics. This role provides hands-on practicum to develop applied physiologic and biomechanical assessment skills in the context of high-performance sport. Educational focus will be on best practices for data collection, analysis, interpretation, and results dissemination.
Students will learn to directly administer physiologic (e.g., VO2 max, lactate threshold, running economy, and resting metabolic rate) and biomechanical (e.g., gait testing, countermovement jump, and strength testing) testing as requested across sports within U-M Athletics.
HPSSC will be supporting students in this role alongside others to be implemented as part of a cohort that will meet regularly in a unique collaborative environment. Participants will consult with Athletic Department stakeholders to gain knowledge of the expectations and demands related to athlete performance in practice and competitions as well as the coordination of team professional staff to promote athlete health and well-being.

Position Details
Location: University of Michigan, Human Performance & Sport Science Center Athlete Innovation Lab at U-M Athletics South Performance Center.
Position Type: Volunteer or for credit roles for 2025.
Hours: Daytime work hours. Defined scheduling is set by lab staff.

Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the setup and administration of human movement assessments in-lab and in-field using inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors, treadmills, metabolic carts, blood lactate monitors, and urine and/or blood samples before, during, and after exercise for student athletes.
- Monitor and maintain lab equipment ensuring proper functioning and data accuracy.
- Help collect and organize data gathered from assessments.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for lab staff and other students.
- Support student assessment skill training.
- Collaborate with athletic trainers, coaches, and HPSSC faculty and staff to support ongoing projects and studies.
- Maintain inventory of lab equipment and supplies.
- Assist in the preparation of reports.
- Attend mandatory training sessions.
- Attend required monthly workshop sessions.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled as an upper level undergraduate or master level student at University of Michigan.
- Strong interest in sports science, technology, or related fields.
- Basic knowledge of biomechanical and/or physiologic assessments is required through the following:
- Took an exercise science or biomedical science course(s).
- Took or worked in an exercise physiology lab.
- Took or worked in a biomechanical/gait analysis lab.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent time management skills and strong commitment to schedules.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Able to commit to working defined days and times as scheduled.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Skills
- Experience with technical support or troubleshooting.
- Background in sports or physical education.
- Familiarity with athletic training or sports performance metrics.
Timeline
2025
Submit application materials to HPSSC by April 30, 2025. We will review applications until all positions are filled. These positions may begin mid-summer or mid-August through the fall 2025 term.
Application Review
HPSSC and Athletics Dept. Staff will review applications, conduct interviews, and select a candidate until need is met.
Start Date
Beginning of the independent study and hands-on work as described will depend on review of the application and interview materials. There may be opportunity to be trained and begin work in mid-summer or mid-August 2025. To be determined with the student and team they are assigned to for this role.
